This segment features Alice Waters, Will Scott, Jr., and David Mas Masumoto. Waters, founder, executive chef, and owner of the world renowned Chez Panisse Restaurant and Café in Berkeley, California, created the Edible Schoolyard program with the Berkeley Unified School District to teach children about the transformative power of growing, cooking and sharing food. Public school children are shown in the garden and the kitchen as part of a school curriculum that weaves together history, math, and science, while at the same time supporting change in the relationship kids have with food. Scott, a Fresno organic farmer and president of the African-American Farmers of California, brings fresh produce to poor, predominantly African-American inner-city neighborhoods. Masumoto, a third generation farmer in California’s Central Valley, writer, and passionate food activist, uses the Sun Crest peach as an example to describe the value of preserving our cultural connection to flavorful food.
